Saving Money on Residential Property Taxes

When your yearly property tax assessment arrives do you really take the time to stop and think about its accuracy? Can your property really sell at as much as the tax assessor says? Are you being subjected to an unjust amount?

For 40 years, I have helped homeowners and condominium owners file appeals against unfair assessments. Having worked as a property tax attorney in a large firm for many years, I am able to offer knowledgeable representation with the personal service only a small firm can offer.

Beginning the Residential Property Tax Appeals Process

My residential clients usually come to me after receiving an assessment notice indicating their residential property assessment for the year. I determine whether or not I recommend filing a residential property tax appeal. I will not lead you into the process if I don’t think there will be anything to recover, because I don’t get a fee unless I save you money.

While reviewing your potential residential property tax appeal, I use my access to various databases to provide comparable sales and listing information to see if an appeal is justified.

Combined with my resources and experience, I work with several qualified real estate appraisers who assist me in ensuring we pursue all applicable options for reducing your tax amounts.

Appealing To The Residential Board Of Review

Residential property owners must appeal to the board of review in their city or township, usually within a month or less of receiving their property tax assessment notice. Boards generally meet in March; however, Wyandotte, Grand Rapids, Wyoming and Detroit have boards that meet in February.

Boards routinely deny appeals. After a denial, residential property owners have until July 31st to appeal to the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
